Warp Five 73: The Fleet That Was Few and Far Between / by Norman Lao

It all began with a just handful of ships.

Enterprise had the unique opportunity, as the prequel series, to introduce many of the origins of basic Star Trek canon; how M-Class was derived from the Vulcan word Minshara (with regard to classifying planets suitable for humanoid life), the first use of photon(ic) torpedoes, at times hinting of creating the Prime Directive, and of course the first Starship named Enterprise. And possibly most important, Enterprise sheds light on the proud, yet trepidatious birth of the first Human fleet that comprised all of the United Earth Space Probe Agency's (UESPA) scientific exploration and planetary defense vessels.

For those of you who have watched or are currently watching Enterprise, you may not realize that in certain episodes, you truly see the limited reach and scope of Starfleet's ships of the line - in the mid 22nd century, they were likely a little less than a dozen ships in total. So, in this episode, we'll be exploring the origins of the first ships of Earth's Starfleet and the United Earth Space Probe Agency; how and why they were necessary and their service status while Archer and the crew of the NX-01 were pushing Warp Five into deep space.
